Operation Smile - Maria

Though the first 5 years of Maria's life were filled with hardship and pain, she now has a reason to smile and a bright future ahead of her!

A Broken Family... A New Smile, A New Life for Maria

Abandoned by both her parents, Maria Eulália Cabralda Costa faced incomprehensible pain during her first five years of life in Brazil. She was born with a cleft lip that scarred her beautiful features. Her parents separated when she was just a baby, and her father chose two of her siblings to live with him. Her mother chose two others. Neither of them wanted Maria, a beautiful little girl with huge eyes that reflect her emotions. When Maria’s parents left her, the city’s Child Protection Council called her grandmother, who chose to raise her small granddaughter.

As Maria grew older, she begged her grandmother to allow her to skip school. Her classmates taunted and tormented her, yelling, “You are crippled. Stay away from me.” Maria was too embarrassed to even play with children in her neighborhood. If she ventured from her home, she covered her mouth with her hands.

Maria’s grandmother was determined to find help for her granddaughter. She first approached the mayor of her city, who was also a doctor. Eventually, a government official directed her to Operation Smile. When she arrived at the medical mission in Fortaleza, 5-year-old Maria immediately captured the hearts of all the medical volunteers.

After her surgery, she was bursting with laughter and smiles. “I’m so very happy,” said her grandmother. “She plays, runs, talks. She is completely different. Everything has changed for the best. She is not ashamed anymore. Now, she is always looking at herself in the mirror. She always says that she is beautiful, that she is gorgeous. It was everything we have ever wanted.”
Maria now looks forward to school and works very hard.

Would you like to be a part of this mission to reclaim, recapture, TRANSFORM a child's life? Please join me in supporting Operation Smile! Click here to donate on my website (on the left hand side under Operation Smile - Donate). No purchase is necessasry. And THANK YOU for joining with me to transform lives like Maria's!

Cricut Crop - Lucy Version

Last month I held my first Cricut Crop - where everyone got to learn a little about their Cricut machines, mats, blades, settings and of course our Art Philosophy Cricut Cartridge. Then we all made projects on our Cricuts using our Roxie papers - with a Valentine's Theme. There was one group that didn't get to participate before Valentine's Day, so I needed to redesign the projects a little. I decided to use our new Lucy paper - and here is what I came up with!

What's so cool about this is everyone who took the first class can pretty much use those instructions to create these and other variations on their own! The foundations are the same, I just changed some of the embellishments - and of course the papers.

The first one is using our kraft card to create a treat holder. I used Little Debbie Fancy Cakes for this project. (LOVE Little Debbie's!) I added some 3-D roses to the oval on the front, along with a sentiment from one of the stamps in the Cricut Collection, and some of our color ready ribbon at the top - only, I didn't color it! It was perfect as is!

The next re-make is the chinese to-go box. The first time around I made a nugget box with a truffle inside. This time I used the same size box for a little Fresh Linen votive candle! The sentiment is from the Remarkable Wreath stamp set.

On top of the box I added some layered flat flowers and leaves.

And finally the door hanger re-make. I seem to have a habit of using the door hangers on drinks with a snack stuck in the pocket. This time, I put flower seeds in the pocket and tied the top to a set of garden gloves!

The sentiment on the front is from our May stamp of the month - Friendship Bouquet. It reads "Plant a seed of friendship; reap a bouquet of happiness. Lois L. Kaufman". Perfect - huh????

So there you have it! A project re-make, made easy with Close To My Heart products and the Art Philosophy Cricut Collection!

Cricut Class - Rose Flower Bouquets

Look what just bloomed at my house -- in the middle of winter!

Do you LOVE fresh flowers but find it hard to justify your purchase since they only last about a week? I've got the perfect solution - make your own! That's what I did! I used 3 different colors - Creme Brulee, Sunset, and Smoothie - inked all of the flowers with Smoothie ink and now they look perfect together!

This is what we are making at my Cricut Class this month! And you can too!!

My first rose bouquet, for convention last year, was made using Tulip cardstock for the roses and New England Ivy for the leaves. In my opinion, a much more "realistic" color combo.

But for this class, those colors are no longer available in bulk. So you can choose from the following colors for your roses - all the same or any combo! (From left to right: Blush, Smoothie, Cranberry, Honey, Creme Brulee, Sunset). I used all the same rose shape - but there are 6 different 3-D flowers to choose from! You can make yours all the same or add some variety! The leaves will all be Olive. However, if you'd like them a little darker, you can ink them with New Englad Ivy instead of Olive ink.

In this workshop you will receive 20 green cloth-covered floral wire stems for 12 flowers and 8 baby's breath. You will also receive paper needed to create all flowers and leaves on the Cricut, along with step-by-step instructions. This is the Basic Kit.

In addition to the paper, stems, and instructions, you will also need a flower ink color, leaf ink color, sponge, Liquid Glass, Tweezers, and Piercing tool. This is the Complete Kit and includes the Basic Kit above.

Sign up to attend my hands on workshop. You will need to bring your cricut machine with you along with your Art Philosophy Cricut Cartridge. You may also want to bring a vase and wire cutter to form your bouquet on site!

Don't have a cricut or can't bring your machine or don't have the Art Philosophy Cricut Cartridge yet? You can request a pre-cut kit for $5 more.

Want a more full bouquet? Purchase as many additional kits as you want!

Here Comes The Sun Layout

Continuing with my Footloose artwork, I have a layout to share. First - I have a disclaimer!! Originally, I had a one page layout in a shadow box in mind, but it morphed into a two-page layout. It's a little too busy for my taste, but that's just what happened!

There is a lot of fun new product in this layout! First off, it features our new Footloose paper and Complements Dimensional Elements!

I sandpaper distressed and ink distressed the edges of the papers and inked the edges of DE's. The DE letters are popped up with 3-D foam tape over our new Baker's Twine (Paradise) which is knotted to resemble rope found along the pier - only in a softer color that coordinates with the papers!

Also featured is our new Seaside Wooden Shapes. These beauties are perfect just out of the bag! But you can ink distress them or - as I did with some - paint them with pearl paint and sprinkle with Prisma Glitter while it is still wet for some sparkling fun!

Also featured are our new Sparkle flourishes - used here to resemble water splashing - and our new bitty opaques pearl gems are a perfect accent on the DE's.

Hopefully, all of this beachy artwork has helped to thaw out some of Winter's chill!

Cricut and Quick Cards - Shell

Are you a card maker? Would you like to easily create a card with one quick stamp? We've got just the stamp set for you! Our new Spring/Summer Idea book features two such stamp set - Quick Cards Shell, and Quick Cards Butterfly.

Here is a card made with the Shell stamp set.

As you can see, I've used our Art Philosophy Cricut Cartridge AGAIN for my card. LOVE IT! Then stamped the new Quick Cards - Shell image on the front! Just for fun, I decided to paper piece the shell in the center - popped up with 3-D foam tape. I sandpaper distressed the edges of the cardstock with our rough grit and inked with Desert Sand and Cocoa ink - to give it a worn and weathered look.

I used our Blending Pen and Lagoon ink pad to add some color along the water/flourishes. And then accented them with our new Bitty Pearl Opaques.

Stay tuned for a Footloose layout coming soon....
